Understanding VLSI and the Importance of Certification Programs

Have more questions?

Welcome to the Parent’s Corner, where we help you understand the world of Semiconductors, IC (integrated circuits, aka electronic chips) and VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration). This is an exciting career option, with average annual salaries exceeding 50L in 5-10 years and 1Cr in 15-20years. We know that many parents may not be familiar with the specifics of ICs/VLSI, so we’ve put together a simple and clear guide to help you understand why this field is so important in today’s technology-driven world.

VLSI stands for Very Large Scale Integration, a process that involves designing and creating integrated circuits (ICs) with lakhs and crores of transistors. These ICs are the building blocks of all modern electronic devices—computers, smartphones, medical devices, cars, and even household appliances. VLSI allows crores or even hundreds of crores of transistors (tiny switches that control the flow of electricity) to be packed into a single chip. Some examples of ICs, include the CPU like the Pentium, GPU, powering AI, Memory chips….

Without VLSI, our everyday gadgets and machines wouldn’t exist in the form we know them today. It plays a critical role in advancing technology, enabling everything from faster processors to more efficient energy usage.

In short this is modern electronics! VLSI market size is estimated to be over 50 lakh crores, and rising fast.

VLSI is at the heart of all cutting-edge technology. As we continue to rely more on smart devices, artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, and the Internet of Things (IoT), the demand for VLSI experts is skyrocketing. Companies are looking for skilled professionals who can design and develop the next generation of high-performance chips that power all these innovations.

By gaining expertise in VLSI, your child is stepping into a field with immense job opportunities, both in India and globally. Major global tech companies like Intel, AMD, Apple, Nvidia, Samsung, Qualcomm and many more, are heavily investing in VLSI technology. This means VLSI professionals are not only in demand now, but will be for many years to come.

To understand this we need to understand first what are hiring managers looking for? Students with a degree, students willing to learn or students who are ready to contribute and work independently. Managers want their team to be the best, hence being skilled and deeply understanding VLSI/ICs is your best bet.

Electrical or electronics engineering (EE, EEE, ECE,…) are broad fields and it is not practical to focus on one area like VLSI or ICs. Several colleges have traditional programs, while the industry is rapidly evolving. The Industry quality software tools, also called EDA tools, are expensive. Since the career is so lucrative, it is difficult to find good faculty. Hence mastering this field is more difficult.

While a degree provides foundational knowledge, since it covers many area including power, communications, control systems and so on. Hence in most cases the students are not “Industry ready” for VLSI careers. Our Professional Diploma program in partnership with IIT, Bhubaneswar is designed to fill this gap and give your child the skills and knowledge to be ready to independently contribute and be sought after by the industry. Our program:

  1. Best Faculty : Top professors from IIT and Industry leaders (country heads, VPs, directors of large organizations) teach this program. As parents you appreciate, It is not just theory, but experience also that is essential.  Our faculty are the foundation of our program.

  2. Learn by doing: In our experience the best way to learn, if not the only way, is by doing yourself.  Each course includes its own lab, with more than 50% of the grade decided by project work and home work, designed to present real-world problems solved using industry-standard tools, making your child job-ready when they complete the program. It is not just mastering difficult concepts, but learning practically by solving industry problems using Industry tools. This experience will also help the student build his resume.

  3. Excellence attracts success: Although a cliché, from the movie ‘3 Idiots’, in our experience this is absolutely true. To be successful in this industry, it is essential to be extremely skilled and knowledgeable, with so many companies and so many difficult problems to solve, a master problem solver will be recognized sooner or later.

  4. Tough program: Unfortunately, the program will require immense amount of hard work! Unfortunately there is no other way, we have designed a good program, and are here to help answer questions and guide, but the student will have to put the time and effort.

  5. Expensive program: Best Faculty, state of the art software tools and access to labs, unfortunately costs money, and this translates into fees. However, most banks offer student loans to cover this expense. Finally, this cost is likely a fraction of what the student will earn in the first year alone!

  6. Certificate from IIT and MOSart Labs: Students completing the course will receive the certificate/diploma from IIT Bhubaneswar and MOSart Labs. A certificate from IIT, do we need to say more…..
  7. Placement Support: Complete placement support, including preparing resume’s, interview practice, finding companies to interview candidates and other guidance will be provided to all candidates.

If you child likes engineering problem solving, and is willing to put the time and effort, by enrolling in our program, your child will gain a clear competitive edge, making them more attractive to employers and helping them build a strong, successful career in this dynamic industry.

A career is not something to be taken lightly, we understand and respect that.

Frequently Asked Questions [FAQs]

Don’t worry if you’re unfamiliar with VLSI. Your support comes from encouraging your child to follow their interests and helping them understand the importance of gaining practical skills and developing expertise in their chosen career. You can also stay informed by reading articles, attending webinars, or joining our free orientation sessions. Finally feel free to ask us any questions and we will be happy to answer and support.

No career is for everyone. Having said that if problem solving, building new things and electronics interests your child, VLSI can be a rewarding career. VLSI is one of the most promising fields in technology, since this is about developing the latest chips at the heart of all innovation including AI. The brain behind all electronics, VLSI is at the core of all new developments, including Automobiles, phones, medicine, AI, smart homes, you name it. With additional focus of the government, semiconductors (VLSI) is all set to blast off to new heights in India. Question is, do you want your child to be a part of this semiconductor revolution in India?

Electrical engineering is broad and covers a wide area, hence a degree usually provides a good foundation. Further with this field evolving rapidly, all but the very top institutions are struggling to keep up, both in terms of curriculum and faculty. Our professional diploma program offer specialized hands-on training in the latest tools and technologies, by Industry leaders and IIT Faculty. This program can help your child develop his/her design skills, making your child more competitive in the job market by equipping them with the practical skills employers look for making them sought after in the industry.

There are about one lakh twenty five thousand VLSI professionals working in India and this number is growing rapidly.  Given the acute shortage worldwide, there are often opportunities for experienced VLSI engineers to get offers to work abroad. India is becoming a hub for semiconductor design and development, with many multinational companies like Intel, AMD, Cisco, Qualcomm, and Texas Instruments having a strong presence. The sector is now being heavily promoted by the government and is expected to expand rapidly both in India and abroad.

Certification programs can range from a few months to a year, depending on the depth of the course. Most programs are flexible, allowing students to learn at their own pace. At MOSart Labs our goal is to help the students develop skills to become world class VLSI professionals in their chosen specialty. We expect a student with full time focus can complete this program in one year, but on a part time basis the student could complete the program at their own pace.
